Washington has had its 'largest' tuberculosis outbreak in 20 years.
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Washington is dealing with its worst TB epidemic in 20 years, prompting the Evergreen State to remain on high alert.
An increase in the number of cases
The increase in tuberculosis transmissions grew more obvious in 2021, when the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) recorded 199 cases, up 22% from 2020. According to King 5, the pattern seems to have persisted this year, with the department reporting 70 instances on Thursday.
The Puget Sound area, notably King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties, was struck the worst by the epidemic last year. Cases have been recorded all around Washington in 2022. According to the Department of Health, at least 17 new cases have been linked to each other and state jails, making it the "biggest" tuberculosis epidemic in the area in the recent two decades.
"We haven't seen a cluster of tuberculosis cases like this in 20 years." Dr. Tao Sheng Kwan-Gett, Washington State's chief scientific officer, told King 5 that the pandemic "has undoubtedly led to the spike in cases and breakout in at least one correctional institution."
